Greenhouse Vegetable Growing
The challenge for Swiss vegetable growers to heat greenhouses without fossil fuels from 2026 is a big one. In response to the demands of Migros, the largest customer of vegetable growers, Swiss growers must move away from traditional heating methods such as propane and oil to meet their energy efficiency and sustainability requirements. This requires a significant expansion of renewable energy sources and new technologies that can capture and use waste heat.
Geothermal energy, wood chips and heat pumps are among the options currently used by Swiss vegetable farmers to reduce their dependence on traditional fossil fuels. However, as demand increases, new solutions are needed.
Waste heat from high-performance computers is one such option that is emerging as a potential solution. By placing these computers in immersion cooling tanks, up to 97% of the heat can be captured and returned to the greenhouse for heating purposes.
